Incandescent lamps, energy-saving lamps, and LED lamps are different types of lighting, each with its own specific characteristics. How does this work exactly? What are the differences between an incandescent lamp, energy-saving lamp, and an LED lamp? And what important advantages and disadvantages do each of the lighting types have? You can read more about it below!

Incandescent lamps: the start of a lighting revolution

In the list of energy-saving lamps, incandescent lamps and LED lamps, the incandescent lamp is considered the oldest lamp of the three types of lighting mentioned. Light bulbs defined the lamp market until the first decade of the twenty-first century. But since 2012 this type of lamp may no longer be marketed. Since February 2016, light bulbs have been permanently banned. The most important reason?  Light bulbs use a relatively large amount of energy because they only convert a limited part of the electricity supply into the light.

Energy-saving lamps: more economical and long-lasting

An energy-saving lamp is actually a small variant of the fluorescent tube that has been folded up. Energy-saving lamps are inexpensive to purchase and also save considerably more energy than traditional incandescent lamps. An energy-saving lamp is about 80 percent more energy-efficient than an incandescent lamp. Economical on energy-saving lamps are also the long lifespan of this type of lamps: on average they last no less than 7,000 band hours.

A disadvantage of energy-saving lamps, compared to LED lights. Is that it takes a while for them to burn well and therefore you cannot switch them on and off immediately. In addition, switching on and off saving lamps leads to a shortening of the lifespan of this type of lamp. Finally, it is also a disadvantage of this type of lamp that there is mercury in this type of lamp. If the lamp breaks or the protective glass breaks, you must be careful. These lamps should be returned to the chemical waste because they are toxic by the mercury.

The LED lights as innovative lights

LED lamps are different from energy-saving lamps in the sense that an LED lamp lasts almost three times as long as an energy-saving lamp. LED lamps to have an average of around 20,000 (!) Burning hours, compared to 7,000 for traditional energy-saving lamp types. The purchase value of LED is higher than that of energy-saving lamps – an average of 20 euros instead of 10 euros per lamp. But this is therefore compensated by the longer lifespan of the LED. The saving compared to incandescent lamps is at the same level as energy-saving and LED lights, namely at 80 percent.

Another advantage of the LED lamp is that these are nowadays available in all sorts of colors, types, and variants and in recent years it has become increasingly cheaper to purchase. You can do proportionally with LED lighting – just like with an  LED wall lamp. Then also realize the greatest saving if you look at the ratio between price and saving. The cost per burning hour of LED lamps is on average € 0.0010 per lamp. While the price of a burning hour of saving lamps is € 0.0014. The more lights you use in your home, the more you save if you choose LED.

Orientate well before you make a purchase

Finally, two more useful tips if you are looking for a good LED lamp: realize that this type of lamp must be able to lose its heat and is therefore slightly less suitable for use in spotlights than, for example, saving lamps. A second tip: orient yourself broadly and well on all available lamps that are available. There are, in fact, enormous differences and variations in light intensity, quality and color varieties. Just be surprised by the many possibilities that LED, saving and other lamp types have to offer to give your interior a big boost! Enjoy the cool sea of light that you can create with good LED lighting – such as a  dimmable LED spot  – and with which you can make your home a lot more stylish!
