How to light up the kitchen? 3 main points to consider

The kitchen is one of the most important places in the home. The light in this room must meet two different and not necessarily complementary needs. On the one hand, lighting for the kitchen must be intense and energetic, that is to say, functional to the preparation of food. On the other hand, it must also be warm and not aggressive, so as to encourage conviviality. The question, therefore, arises spontaneously: how to light up the kitchen? Here are the 3 main points to consider!

Kitchen lighting: what are the points where to install the light?

As is the case for all the rooms, optimal lighting is obtained by combining background light (the basic light), indirect light (peripheral light) and functional light (aimed at the points where it is needed).

From this we can already deduce that the best solution would be to use more lights in the kitchen:

  • A suspension lamp for kitchen on the table (background / functional lighting),
  • The spotlight above the wall units (for a scenic effect)
  • Kitchen wall lamps or LED strips (as indirect lighting),
  • Other suspensions for kitchen or LED strips (as a complement to functional lighting).

Dining table

One of the main areas is certainly the table: a point where a hanging lamp should be lowered. The kitchen chandeliers, if used exclusively for the table, should have lights directed downwards and be installed at the optimum height to illuminate the most of its entire surface. In this case, the suspension would be used as a functional light.

However, since the table is usually located in the center of the room, kitchen chandeliers are also used as the main light source (i.e. for background lighting). This dual function, which he performs, means that the chandelier must be considered as the main element from which to plan to light in the kitchen!

Once the main light source is chosen, focus on the peripheral areas of the kitchen. This is to avoid creating shaded areas that would make the room seem darker and less livable.

For less illuminated corners you can choose wall lights or even LED strip lights with a beam of light mainly aimed upwards.

Functional lighting for worktops

How to illuminate a kitchen to perfection without considering the various worktops? Impossible! When cooking, it is customary to use the various flat surfaces to cut, knead, blend, etc. To carry out all these actions, adequate light is needed: intense, white and directed just where you are working.

But if the table is already well served by the chandelier, it is not certain that the same thing also applies to the tops of the kitchen cabinet, which are usually found at the ends of the room and in the shadows. In this case, we would need a dedicated light! For example, we can install LED strips under the cabinet of the piece of furniture, so that the entire area below is properly lit.

For work surfaces such as islands and peninsulas you can always choose suspensions, but soberer than the one placed on the table (so as not to diminish its aesthetic value). Given the lack of space on the upper part of the island or the peninsula, one or more suspension lamps are ideal for obtaining a direct light beam from the relative floors.

Kitchen ceiling lights

In some cases, however, the best solution could be to focus on a single light source capable of fulfilling all 3 needs (background, indirect and functional light). If, for example, you have a rather small kitchen with low ceilings or if you do not have the possibility of modifying/integrating the electrical system, a ceiling light would be the obvious choice!

The kitchen ceiling light can be installed both in the area above the table, but also as a backlight, in order to better illuminate the entire room. The kitchen ceiling lights, like the suspensions, are available in different styles, colors, sizes, and models … so you will surely have the chance to find the one you like best and that can fully reflect the style of the whole room.
